Finned Tube

2025 10/21

1. What is a finned tube?

A finned tube is a type of heat transfer tube with fins or ribs attached to its outer surface. It is commonly used to improve heat exchange efficiency. Finned tubes are also known as ribbed tubes or finned pipes. By adding fins to the tube surface, the heat transfer area is significantly expanded, thereby enhancing the heat exchange capacity. Fins come in various forms, including open-type, annular, or corrugated.

The structure of a finned tube mainly includes:

Base tube (bare tube): The core pipe section, typically made of circular tubing.

Fins: Sheet-like or rib-like structures attached to the outer wall of the tube to expand the surface area and improve heat exchange efficiency.

2. Heat Transfer Principle of Finned Tubes

In heat exchangers, systems composed of ordinary round tubes (bare tubes) often have different convective heat transfer coefficients for the fluid inside and outside the tube. The heat transfer coefficient (h) is defined as the rate of heat transfer per unit area per unit temperature difference, reflecting the heat transfer capability between the fluid and the tube wall.

Finned tubes are widely used in applications such as air conditioning systems, boiler flue gas recovery, industrial cooling equipment, and heat pumps. Their optimized design can significantly save energy and improve equipment performance.
