Heat Exchanger Tube Bundle: Why Not Clean It Directly But Pull It Out?

2025 09/04

Many people have such a question: Why can't we clean the heat exchanger tube bundle directly but have to pull it out? Isn't this both troublesome and time-consuming? In fact, there are many factors that have to be considered behind this.

Direct cleaning has obvious limitations. The structure of the heat exchanger tube bundle is complex, with internal pipes crisscrossing and being long and thin. During direct cleaning, it is difficult for water flow or cleaning agent to reach every corner evenly, especially the deep inside of the pipes, which easily forms cleaning blind spots. Over time, a large amount of dirt, impurities and corrosion products will accumulate in these blind spots, which not only affects the heat exchange efficiency, but also may accelerate the corrosion of the tube bundle and shorten the service life of the equipment.

Moreover, some dirt is very stubborn and adheres tightly to the surface of the tube bundle. The strength of direct cleaning is limited, making it difficult to completely remove these stubborn dirt. For example, in the heat exchangers of some chemical industries, a thick layer of hard scale may form on the surface of the tube bundle, which cannot be removed at all by direct flushing.

In contrast, pulling out the tube bundle for cleaning has obvious advantages. After pulling out the tube bundle, it can be inspected and cleaned in an all-round and non-dead-angle way. A variety of more effective cleaning methods can be adopted, such as high-pressure water jet cleaning and chemical soaking cleaning, to deeply clean the inner and outer surfaces of the tube bundle and ensure that every part is clean and free of dirt.

At the same time, pulling out the tube bundle also facilitates a detailed inspection of the tube bundle. It can timely detect whether the tube bundle has problems such as deformation, bending, corrosion and perforation, so as to carry out timely maintenance or replacement, avoid equipment failures during operation, and ensure the continuity and stability of production.

Therefore, although pulling out the heat exchanger tube bundle for cleaning seems troublesome, in the long run, it can better maintain the equipment performance, improve production efficiency, and is a more scientific and reasonable method.
